Spider-Man 3 Review

Monday, May 7th, 2007

For me Spider-Man 2 is still the best Spider-Man movie and Dock Ock still best from-the-comic-to-movie-villain ever (for Spider movies if not for all). Venom was a big disappointment. Sam Raimi just made a wrong swing to include Venom in 3. Everybody knows Venom was a rushed villain, never planned to be in the film, and never had a good poster. Eddie Brock’s story should be included only up to the point where he transforms to Venom but the rest or the appearance would be better to reveal to the next installation.

Having 3 villains in one Spider-Man movie is so sick. And I have to see Batman Forever or Batman and Robin to see the difference. They didn’t give much credit to each villain. With the exception on Sandman whose back-story is well nourished. 2 hours and half is not enough to know who, what and why went wrong for a villain, especially for a great villain like Venom. And even Peter Parker/Spider-Man character gets too little spotlight for the fact that he has to solve many conflicts in this movie.

I don’t like the story of a villain getting some amnesia and forgetting his enemy. And what on earth he gets amnesia? I mean his not anymore a normal human and like Spider-Man or his father Goblin who fights and get knocked down on a wall or something they didn’t easily get black eyes and worst amnesia.

And the question is… what happened to the hatred story of Osborne family to Spider-Man that was build-up in the last 2 movies? Even I know that my best friend didn’t kill my father he almost killed me and left scars on my face so why would I help him. For MJ? Or will I trust more the butler who just walks in and told me that he knows everything happening in our house despite that I never even seen his shadow on the last 2 previous films? (I’m not so sure.)

I want to see MJ character in this film like in the ending of 2 like she will tell Peter “Go get them Tiger”. Now she’s back as weak and lack of confidence to herself as Spider-Man’s love interest like in the first movie, same old lover’s problem.

Their love story is not as cute as in 1 & 2.

I know if you’re not a comic fanatic you will not be able to see the flaws of Venom/symbiote. Although “who cares/ WTH is comics, movie is different”, there’s so much a non-comic fanatic cannot understand about the alien thing in this movie. For example it’s never said it gets into someone’s mind and knows what its host knows, like in the final fight Eddie Brock calls Peter "Tiger" like MJ, even though Brock never hears her call him that. Another thing is the weakness of fire and noise, I know it, but the audience unfamiliar with Spidey doesn’t and it’s never explained that they’re its only weaknesses. We only get flashback of Spider-Man getting the alien off in the bell tower, when he’s fighting Venom. And there’s a big question why Spider-Man goes to the church in the first place? He’s just there to tear the symbiote?

Great performance by Topher Grace as Eddie Brock Jr. though the film’s biggest and most disappointing character of the film is Venom. 10 minutes screen time and he’s dead.

Next time Mr. Raimi I advice you to stick on one villain like what you did with Dock Ock and Green Goblin. Sandman is enough he’s a good villain though. This isn’t a BATMAN film.

The fight scene at the end is so disgustful, two on two, like Batman and Robin fighting Two-Face and The Riddler? The CG for Sandman as he becomes a giant and huge is disastrous. I like him when he’s fighting Spider-Man in the subway, the normal Sandman with some solid sand hand – AWESOME. But the huge monstrous sandman thing to scare the kids watching? – forget it. If I were Harry I will just borrow my father’s costume and paint it orange.

I didn’t notice until the credits rolled off that it is already end of the film. I’m looking for a web swinging thing to come in the screen in top of the buildings and roof and some little taste of sequel. This will just add to the flaws of the film – a sad ending that leaves a sad face while I’m going out in the movie house.

6 out of 10 stars, the previous Spider-Man films perfect 10. I’ll be directing Spider-Man 4 who’s interested in casting BTW?
